    Dijon braised Brussels sprouts

    Dijon-braised Brussels sprouts

These Dijon-braised Brussels sprouts are delicious. I've made this particular recipe several times over the past month, and every time, people have asked for the recipe. One important disclaimer here: my friends like Brussels sprouts. Even if you aren't a huge fan of them though, I think this dish will convince you that they are a vegetable worth eating, at least when braised with Dijon mustard and dried apricots.

    Dijon braised Brussels sprouts

Candice Kumai was on the very first season of Top Chef. Back when it was good and not just another soapy reality TV show. She was eliminated pretty quickly, but managed to do just fine for herself as "the sexy chef". For reasons that defy any explanation, I have three of her cookbooks. I guess because, who doesn't want to be a sexy chef? On the other hand, I am not entirely certain that a sexy chef also cooks delicious food. Until this summer I had never done more than mark some of her recipes as ones to try, so it seemed only fair that her cookbook "Cook Yourself Sexy" be among the first set tested. Given the success of this recipe among friends, the sexy chef wins her first round, although last night I had much better Brussels sprouts from the Flying Pig in Oceanside, CA [they were molasses & Dijon-braised] so there's some room to improve these....

    Mushroom Biscuits

    Mushroom Biscuits

Mushroom biscuits combine two of my very favorite things - mushrooms and buttery dough. So, picking recipe no. 2 to try from Little Flower was not much of a challenge. And happily, this little book did not disappoint, as I could happily eat these biscuits at every meal. Fried egg on mushroom biscuit breakfast sandwich? Yes. Green salad (or green soup) with mushroom biscuit for lunch? Yes. Braised chicken and greens with a biscuit? Also yes.

    Green Soup

    Green soup

Since making Christine Moore's Green Soup once, I've made quite a few other dishes from Little Flower. I have no idea what compelled me to buy Little Flower: Recipes from the Cafe. I had never heard of the cafe nor its chef-owner. However this book found its way into my home, I ignored it for almost exactly three years. I remember flipping through it when it arrived, feeling underwhelmed, and forgetting all about it. As a result, it was one of the first cookbooks I thought I could quickly eliminate with this "judge a book by three recipes" approach. I was wrong. Little Flower is a tiny cookbook, but the recipes it contains are outstanding.

    Drunken Blondies

    Drunken Blondies

A blondie is basically just a giant chocolate chip cookie baked in a pan. Sometimes that turns out well, other times the end result is tragically disappointing and leaves you wanting a regular cookie. These are the former; they are amazing. Please consider yourself warned. They are a bit like Pringles, at least as far as the slogan goes. You can't eat just one.

    Famous Flourless Chocolate Cake

Flourless Chocolate Cake | the Tastiest Book

This flourless chocolate cake is the cake I made for every Tahoe ski trip we took while I was a postdoc. It's super easy to prepare, doesn't take too long to bake, and is best if made a little in advance. It's the perfect rich chocolate dessert to make when you don't have much time to bake but do have a little advance notice.
